In ricordo del nostro CARL PAGANELLI

«Arrivati ad una certa età, molti di noi cominciano a chiedersi cosa lasceranno dopo di loro; molti di noi risolvono con cose tangibili, denaro, oggetti, immobili, credendo così che saranno ricordati dai loro cari.

Carl ci ha lasciato due cose che però non hanno valore in nessun mercato terreno: AMICIZIA e CONOSCENZA.

La prima volta che l’abbiamo incontrato, non riuscivamo a capacitarci, conoscendo il suo curriculum, della sua umiltà, della sua voglia di calarsi nella nostra realtà, anni luce da quello che viveva ogni giorno, per aiutarci senza nessun tornaconto, professionalmente ma senza nessun ritorno professionale.

E la sua accessibilità, quell’essere disponibile oltre il ragionevole a rispondere a domande che avevamo l’innata capacità di rendere pedanti, sciocche, poco logiche; aveva una carica umana rara, la capacità di entrare in contatto con le persone e farle sentire a proprio agio, ascoltate e rispettate, cosa che, nel nostro mondo – ma qualsiasi mondo – è pratica poco professata, tanto è più comoda l’arroganza e l’umiliazione del tuo prossimo. E questo è un lascito che rimarrà per sempre nei nostri cuori

La conoscenza che ci ha donato, sviluppata in decenni di esperienza di alto livello sui campi e decenni di esperienze da tutor a migliaia di arbitri in tutto il mondo, i suoi consigli, i suoi commenti, i suoi “make it easy” quando ci perdevamo in ragionamenti privi di costrutto, è un lascito che rimarrà per sempre nelle nostre menti.

 Ed è tutto qua: ogni volta che calpesteremo un campo da football indossando una zebrata, lui sarà lì con noi; ogni volta che applicheremo un suo consiglio, lui sarà lì con noi; ogni volta che ci sentiremo un pochino arbitri migliori, lui sarà lì con  noi; ogni volta che un rookie metterà in pratica un suo consiglio, lui sarà lì con noi; ogni volta che “Carl diceva che…”, lui sarà lì con noi.

Ed è qualcosa che si avvicina all’IMMORTALITÀ.»

Nelle parole di Flavio Garlaschi noi tutti rivediamo e sentiamo Carl, il nostro Carl T. Paganelli, il nostro Presidente Onorario, che ieri alle 4.49 am (orario americano) ci ha lasciato. La sua è stata una lunga battaglia. Nel 2017 gli è stato diagnosticato un linfoma non Hodgkin, lo stesso che aveva sconfitto 28 anni prima. Ma Carl non si è mai lasciato andare, ha lottato fino alla fine con tutte le sue forze. A Novembre ci aveva detto che avrebbe voluto tornare in Italia, ancora una volta, per salutare i tantissimi amici che ha qui, si era parlato di una casa in Toscana, però questa volta senza tenere nessuna lezione, aveva voluto sottolineare, solo stare con le persone che gli volevano bene, voleva salutarle per un’ultima volta. Ci eravamo lasciati con la promessa che appena avrebbe ripreso i kg necessari per poter affrontare un viaggio così lungo, avremmo organizzato il tutto. Poi abbiamo saputo che era andato in Florida, come ogni anno, e questo ci aveva dato qualche speranza, speranza che purtroppo è svanita in fretta, lì infatti Carl se ne è andato.

Nell’Agosto del 2015 ha ricevuto, sue proprie parole, “una delle più alte onorificenze delle sua carriera”; è stato infatti premiato dalla NFLRA (National Football League Referees Association) che gli ha conferito il premio FRIEND FOR LIFE per il supporto che ha dato nel corso degli anni all’associazione arbitrale NFL trainando numerosi arbitri che hanno poi esordito e arbitrato nella lega professionistica; più di 30 degli attuali arbitri NFL provengono dalle leghe dove lui è stato Supervisore.

Carl Paganelli Sr. fa ormai parte della Storia AIAFA, grazie alla sua disponibilità e carica umana, è divenuto il vero e proprio “guru” delle tecnica AIAFA a cui tutta l’Associazione da decenni fa riferimento per interpretazioni e consigli.

Carl è stato nostro Presidente Onorario, nonché Supervisore degli arbitri Italiani. Ha lavorato attivamente con la Commissione Tecnica AIAFA, con regolare scambio di materiale e review di partite.

Era una presenza costante in Italia, non c’era clinic annuale di Febbraio al quale lui non fosse presente, pronto a rispondere ai mille frasi che iniziavano con “IF” che regolarmente gli ponevamo. Non mancava neppure in Luglio, per le finali, pronto a partecipare al clinic di preparazione delle crew e ad accompagnare gli arbitri in campo durante le partite.

Carl è stata una colonna portante della nostra Associazione, è stato al nostro fianco nei momenti più difficili, ci ha aiutati a crescere come arbitri e soprattutto come persone. Chi ha conosciuto Carl sa che in lui si poteva trovare una persona alla quale si potevano chiedere consigli non solo sportivi.

Carl ha fatto moltissimo per gli arbitri italiani. Dobbiamo ringraziare Carl se ancora oggi, dopo 11 anni, possiamo ospitare arbitri americani di grande livello. Con AIAFA infatti ha fondato il progetto OFP – Officiating For Pizza nel 2008, Il programma che  prevede che arbitri americani con curriculum d’eccellenza, scelti da Carl Paganelli in persona, affianchino i nostri arbitri durante i fine settimana arbitrali, sia come Supervisori, che come arbitri.

In questo momento Dave Chesney è in Italia proprio grazie a questo programma. 19 differenti arbitri sono venuti in Italia.

Carl ha dato una grande occasione agli arbitri AIAFA anche in occasione del primo campionato CAFL – China Arena Football League. Dopo aver tenuto un corso sull’Arena Football in Italia, in un paio di anni ha dato la possibilità a diversi arbitri AIAFA di arbitrare in Cina il primo campionato professionistico.

Carl T. Paganelli se ne è andato da questa terra ma non da noi, sarà sempre nei consigli che ci ha dato, negli insegnamenti che ci ha regalato e che oggi tocca a noi tramandare; siamo certi che lo ritroveremo negli amici americani, nell’Officiating For Pizza … è semplicemente parte di AIAFA.

Grazie Carl per tutto quello che hai fatto e continuerai a fare per noi.

«Arriving at a certain age, many of us begin to wonder what they will leave after them; most of them think about tangible things, like money, objects, properties, believing they will be remembered by their loved ones. 

Carl leave us two things which has no value in any earthly market: friendship and knowledge. 

The very first time we met him, we couldn’t believe each other, knowing his resume, for his humility, his desire to understand our reality, far from what he lived every day, to help us without any profit, with professionalism but without any personal benefit. 

And his availability, that unique way to be helpful answering questions we had the inherent ability to make pedantic, foolish, less logic; he had a rare moral strength, the ability to get in touch with people and make them comfortable, feel heard and respected, which in our world – but any “world” – is a little professed practice, the more important is the arrogance and the humiliation of your neighbor. And this is a legacy that will remain in our hearts forever. 

The knowledge he has given us, developed in decades of high level experience on the field and many others as a tutor for thousands of officials all around the world, his advice, his comments, his “make it easy” when we got lost in senseless reasonings, it’s a legacy that will remain forever in our mind. 

And that’s all: every time we step on a football field wearing a striped t-shirt, he will be there with us; every time we apply one of his advice, he will be there with us; every time we feel a little better official, he will be there with us; every time a rookie will apply one of his advice, he will be there with us; every time that “Carl said that…”, he will be there with us. 

And it’s something that come close to the IMMORTALITY. »

In the words of Flavio Garlaschi we all see and hear Carl, our Carl T. Paganelli, our Honorary President, who left us today at 4:49 am (US time). His was a long battle. In 2017 he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the same one he had defeated 28 years earlier. But Carl never gave up, he fought to the end with all of his strength. In November he. Told me he wanted to come back in Italy, once again, to say goodbye to the many friends he has here, there was a talk about a house in Tuscany, but without taking any lesson this time just being with the people who loved him, wanted to say goodbye for the last time. 

We had left each other with the promise that as soon as he regain the necessary pounds needed to face such a long journey, we would have organized everything. Then we learned he had gone to Florida, like every year, and this gave us some hope, hope that unfortunately has quickly vanished, there Carl in fact went away. 

He lived in Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Michigan with his inseparable wife Mary, from whom he had 3 children, all of them NFL officials: Carl Paganelli jr is a 12-year experience umpire, while Perry (21 seasons) and Dino (13 seasons) are back judge. 

Perry and Carl jr officiated the XLI Super Bowl together in 2007, a first time in NFL history. 

A football life, in fact his family as also known as the Football Family.

Carl, a member of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame, served for 58 years as a referee for the West Michigan Officials Association, association that awarded him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in March 2017. He has worked for the United States Football League, World Football League and Arena Football League. He was responsible for the Mid-American Conference referees and for the AFL. 

Carl was one of the leader of the CAFL (China Arena Football League) project, the first Chinese professional league and supervisor for the arbitration sector. 

In August 2015 he received, his own words, “one of the highest honors of his career”; he was in fact awarded by the NFLRA (National Football League Referees Association) which awarded him the FRIEND FOR LIFE prize for the support he has given over the years to the NFL arbitration association, training numerous officials who then made their debut and officiated in the professional league; more than 30 of the current NFL officials come from league he has supervised. 

He has been defined by the press GODFATHER OF OFFICALS, everyone knows him, Brad Brunet of the West Michigan Officials Association says of him: “when he speaks, everyone is listening. He has experience and knowledge, and is pleased to share it”. 

Carl Paganelli Sr. is now part of the AIAFA history, thanks to its availability and human strength he has become the real “guru” of the AIAFA techniques to which the whole Association refers for interpretations and advice.

Carl was our Honorary President, as well as Supervisor of Italian referees. He has worked actively with the AIAFA Technical Commission, with regular exchange of material and matches review. 

He was a constant presence in Italy, there was not annual clinic in February to which he was not present, ready to answer to the thousand if-questions we regularly asked him.

He was not lacking even in July, for the finals, ready to participate in the crew preparation clinic and attending the referees on the field during the matches.

Carl was a backbone of our Association, he was by our side in the most difficult moments, he helped us grow as referees and above all as human being. Who knew Carl knows that in him you could find a person to whom you could ask for advice even if not on sports.

Carl did a lot for the Italian officials. We have to thank Carl if even today, after 11 years, we can host high-level American referees. In fact, with AIAFA he founded the OFP project – Officiating For Pizza in 2008, the program that provides that American referees with excellent resume, chosen by Carl Paganelli himself, stand alongside our referees during officiating weekends, both as Supervisors and as Referee. Right now Dave Chesney is in Italy thanks to this program. 19 different officials came to Italy.

Carl gave a great chance to the AIAFA referees also during the first CAFL championship – China Arena Football League. After having held a course on Arena Football in Italy, in a couple of years he gave the possibility to several AIAFA referees to officiate the first professional championship in China.

Carl T. Paganelli has left this land but not for us, he will always be in the advice he gave us, in the teachings he gave us and which it is now up to us to pass on; we are sure that we will find it in our American friends, in the Officiating For Pizza … it is simply part of AIAFA.
